The Worst Advice We've Ever Heard About Web Design

Some of the most confidently repeated rules in web design are holding projects back. These are the ones we hear most often.

The Worst Advice We've Ever Heard About Web Design

Keep everything above the fold

This advice is older than the scroll wheel. People scroll without being asked, and cramming a page to avoid it produces a compressed layout that is harder to read than the thing it was trying to prevent.

Launch fast and fix it later

Shipping early is good advice. Shipping unfinished and calling it iteration is not. The parts that get postponed are almost always accessibility, empty states and error handling, and those are the parts nobody funds a second time.

Speed is a real constraint. It stops being a strategy the moment it becomes an excuse for skipping the work that is hard to demo.

Copy whatever the market leader does

Their layout solves their problem, at their scale, with their traffic. Adopting it wholesale usually means adopting the compromises they made for reasons that do not apply to you.

Design for the client, not the customer

The person approving the work is rarely the person using it. A studio's job includes saying so, with evidence, before a preference becomes a requirement.
