Paper Atlas runs eight thousand word essays next to twenty page photo stories. The previous template served the essays well and forced every image into the same column.

We rebuilt the issue around a grid with two modes that share a baseline, so a spread can switch between them without the reader noticing a seam.

Alongside the template we produced a short production guide covering paper stock, image preparation and the handful of typographic decisions the editorial team makes each issue without needing a designer.

The brief was a structure flexible enough for both, without the seam showing when an issue moves between them.
